Germany, 1922, approximately 100 minutes

Directed by Ernst Lubitsch

Cast: Emil Jannings, Dagny Servaes, Paul Biensfeldt, Friedrich Kühne

The Loves of Pharaoh (1922) was Ernst Lubitsch’s last big film production before he left Europe, and with its cast of thousands and spectacular sets, Pharaoh was pitched at showing Hollywood that he could make epics. One of the great screen actors of the time, Emil Jannings, stars as the powerful Egyptian Pharaoh Amenes who must marry Theonis, the daughter of an Ethiopian king (Dagny Servaes) to avert war between the two countries. Thought lost for many years, this restored print was reconstructed frame by frame from international sources, and the striking colors of the original nitrate prints were recreated through digital tinting technology.
