Vera Chytilová’s frenetic, anarchist opus is perhaps the most well-known film of the brief but fertile Czech New Wave. In the years leading up to the 1968 Prague Spring, this group of young filmmakers embraced bold and brazen stylistic and narrative experimentation as a means of depicting uncertain and oppressive social realities. Daisies, whose release resulted in Chytilová being barred from making films in her homeland for nearly a decade, follows the antics and exploits to two young women both named Marie (Jitka Cerhová and Ivana Karbanová, who had no acting experience before this film) who through a series of episodic capers and pranks manage to assault every vestige of the patriarchy, the Communist state, and traditional feminine virtue. Accordingly, the film refuses a straightforward plot and flips visual convention on its ear, opting for radical uses of color, editing, and cinematography to create a politically and aesthetically charged film whose insurgent energy still resonates with contemporary society. More than anything, the film is an absolute riot to experience. The Gables Cinema is proud to present Janus Films’ gorgeous 35mm restoration of Chytilová’s psychedelic valentine to the misfits of the world.
