Featuring an imaginative set of creatures, most famously the Pale Man with eyes embedded in his hands, and cleverly juxtaposing children’s fantasy with horror elements, it is no wonder that Pan’s Labyrinth won the Oscars for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Makeup. Those honors are an ironic distinction, as del Toro himself admits the movie that could never be made in Hollywood. Ten years later, Pan’s Labyrinth stands as the director’s best work and one of the finest fantasy films to date.
