When Charlie Kaufman writes a story about himself, the perfect actor to portray him is none other than Nicolas Cage – in a dual role as both Charlie and his fictional twin. Directed Spike Jonze's, this über-meta interpretation of Fellini’s 8 ½, one half is an adaptation of Susan Orlean’s book The Orchid Thief and the other half is a story about Charlie Kaufman trying to adapt The Orchid Thief into a screenplay. The story is as real as it is fake, with the actual Kaufman having been hired by Fox to adapt Orlean’s book back in 1997. Fortunately for us, he suffered severe writer’s block which led to him write a script about that experience and gave birth to what may or may not be Kaufman’s magnum opus. The wryly humorous, self-referential, and multi-layered madness features great turns from Chris Cooper, Meryl Streep and Tilda Swinton among others.
