Tony Scott’s 1993 crime film is really a romance story in disguise. Clarence (Christian Slater), a comic store clerk, celebrates his birthday with a Sonny Chiba triple-feature in a grind-house theater. Against this backdrop, he meets the beautiful Alabama (Patricia Arquette), with whom he makes love later that evening. But Alabama confesses that she’s a rookie call girl paid to sleep with Clarence by his boss. Despite this, the two fall in love and Clarence takes it upon himself to free Alabama from the clutches of her pimp Drexl (Gary Oldman), whose mob connection soon rears its ugly head (in the form of Christopher Walken). What follows is a thrilling escape as Clarence and Alabama run away with a suitcase holding five million dollars’ worth of cocaine. Featuring the savvy writing of Quentin Tarantino and a gallery of oddball performances, True Romance is a funny and violent action jaunt in the best sense.
