Thomas Vinterberg (Far from the Madding CrowdThe HuntThe Celebration) returns to his native Denmark with this 70s-set tale of bohemian living. When academic Erik (Ulrich Thomsen) inherits a large house, wife Anna (Trine Dyrholm) suggests inviting friends and random eccentrics to cohabit. As tensions surface, peace, love and togetherness are tested. Driven by lead performances from Vinterberg's Celebrationstars Thomsen and Dyrholm, The Commune is a sharply observed study of how new values can quickly come into conflict with old habits and affiliations. Among its many prizes, The Commune won the European Academy Award for Best Editing and Danish Academy Awards for Best Screenplay Adaptation and Best Actress, a recognition Ms. Dyrholm also received at the Berlin Film Festival.
