In conjunction with Keith Hennessy’s residency symposium, PICA welcomes artists A.L. Steiner and A.K. Burns, who will participate in the weekend events and screen their “sociosexual” video Community Action Center with a post-film artist Q&A. The film builds upon the themes of queer identity and sexual politics present in Hennessy’s work, and further positions the body as a literal site of artistic action.

Incorporating the erotics of a community where the personal is not only political, but also sexual, this project was heavily inspired by 1970s porn-romanceliberation films, which served as distinct portraits of the urban inhabitants, landscapes, and the body politic of a particular time and place. Collaborators Burns and Steiner worked with artists who created infinitely complex gender and performance roles that are both real and fantastical. It is a unique womyn-centric composition that serves as both an ode and a hole-filler, a hedonistic and distinctly political adventure.
