"A razor-sharp portrait of the Civil Rights Movement." -Scout Foundas, Variety

Two Special Dialogues:

January 19: Immediately following the 6pm show on Monday, Jan. 19 (MLK Day), a brief discussion will be moderated by Kayla Wheeler, PhD candidate in the UI Department of Religious Studies. Wheeler, along with other members of student group Black Hawkeyes, and Deborah Whaley, UI professor of American Studies and African American Studies, will discuss first reactions to the film, differences and similarities between the Civil Rights Movement of the 50s-60s and present day movements for racial equity, and experiences with activism in places like Ferguson, Mo., Cleveland, Ohio, and here in Iowa City.

January 20: American jazz musician Wycliffe Gordon and a guest UI professor will join us for the 7:30pm show on Tuesday, Jan. 20 to introduce the film and participate in a pre-show discussion, with screening immediately to follow. Gordon's visit is sponsored by UIHC and the UI Center for Human Rights. Gordon will also be on campus Tuesday morning for a special musical performance and to deliver the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Lecture.

SELMA

From acclaimed director Ava DuVernay (the first black female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award), SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. DuVernay's SELMA tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.
