Here’s the rags to riches story of Sophie Tucker (1887 – 1966), the iconic superstar who ruled the worlds of vaudeville, Broadway, radio, television and Hollywood throughout the 20th century. Before Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Bette Midler, Marilyn Monroe and Mae West, Sophie Tucker (born Sonya Kalish) was the first woman to entrance audiences with a bold, bawdy and brassy style unlike any other. Producers Susan and Lloyd Ecker spent years combing through Tucker’s 400+ personal scrapbooks. The archival photos and footage alone are worth the price of admission. So are the letters from FBI chief Hoover, who requested one of Sophie’s cast-off gowns. The documentary also includes other delicious bits of show business gossip and intrigue.
