In Paolo Virzi’s latest expert drama, he adapts Stephen Amidon’s Connecticut-set novel and moves the setting to a well-to-do enclave near Milan. Structured in three parts, this captivating whodunit story involves the wealthy Bernaschi family whose son Massimiliano is going out with Serena, the daughter of a struggling real estate agent. With the looming mystery of who is culpable of forcing a bicyclist off the road and driving away, the story branches off into several expertly told strands that explore class and its privileges, while packing surprising twists with each change of perspective. Filled with riveting performances, including Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Luigi Lo Cascio, Valeria Golino and Fabrizio Bentivoglio, this taut character study deconstructs the typical linear narrative, observing transformative events from each character’s perspective. The result is a nuanced account of desire, greed and the value of human life in an age of rampant capitalism and financial manipulation.
