Description

Join host Bill Shelley to learn what all the fascination is about with these two wonderfully eclectic, experimental and classically trained groups!

Since the beginning of Rock and Roll, musicians have embraced prior music genres and techniques to suit their talents and creative spirits. Among those skilled experimenters of styles are Procol Harum and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, who brought symphonic and classical influences to rock, using the organ and Moog synthesizer as part of their unique band configuration.
Procol Harum used church-like organ chords mixed with their complicated and poetic lyrics to inspire their biggest hit, “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” which will be featured, along with “Conquistador,” “A Salty Dog,” and many more. Gary Brooker’s organ technique made the distinctive sound associated with this group, while Robin Trower’s guitar prowess has often been compare to Hendrix.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer relied heavily on the Moog synthesizer to become a narrator in the musical stories they told through music. They also came from classical training and became one of the first major Prog Rock groups to emerge on the FM dials of our radio. This program will include “Rondo,” “Lucky Man,” selections from “Pictures at the Exhibition,” “Take a Pebble,” and more. (Approx. 110 minutes)
