Three years after disappearing, Yusuke (Tadanobu Asano) returns home to his wife Mizuki (Eri Fukatsu) only to announce that he has died and his body lies unidentified at the bottom of the ocean. He invites Mizuki on a trip to visit the people who helped him on the long journey back home. Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa is known for his ghost stories, but this one takes a far more tender approach toward the restless souls living amongst us, exploring Buddhist and Shinto beliefs and reinterpreting the Japanese custom of mitoru—caring for and saying farewell to the terminally ill.
