Anna Rose Holmer’s The Fits finds a girl’s coming-of-age story in a very unlikely place: a boxing gym in Cincinnati’s West End. Toni is an 11-year-old girl who trains at the gym with her older brother, but she finds herself drawn to the girls drill team in the adjacent gym. Enamored by the power and confidence of this strong community of girls, Toni eagerly absorbs routines, masters drills, and even pierces her own ears to fit in. When a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, Toni’s desire for acceptance takes a new turn. Visually captivating, both Holmer and young lead Royalty Hightower are talents to watch.
