Our Last Tango
Argentina, 2016, 85 min, 2K DCP, Dir. German Kral, Spanish with English subtitles
Juan Carlos Copes (84) and María Nieves (81) are the Fred and Ginger of Argentinian tango. They met when they were 17 and 14, and danced together for nearly fifty years. In all those years, they loved and hated each other and went through several painful separations, but always got back together. In Our Last Tango, Juan and María tell their story to a group of young dancers and choreographers from Buenos Aires, who transform the most moving and dramatic moments of the great dancers' lives into indelible tango choreographies. Through separate interviews with Copes and Nieves, we get a sense of two people with very different personalities and expectations. They had trouble communicating in their marriage, but onstage they had a synchronicity that mesmerized the world. They're still dancing as octogenarians, only no longer together. Our Last Tango explores what it means to pursue your passion, how crucial it is to find the right partner. In art as in life.
