Sunny, gum-chewing Joe Buck (Jon Voight) is an aspiring sagebrush lothario who decides to take The Big Apple by storm as a stud-for-hire. When things don't go exactly as planned, Joe finds a soulmate in two-bit hustler Enrico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) whose pipe dream is to cavort, drink in hand, with tanned babes - in Miami. Sometimes it takes an outsider to see thru a culture's veneer; this was the case with British director John Schlesinger (A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling) who, in his Oscar-winning American debut, wallows in a neon lit late-60s Manhattan that is irresistibly sleazy. Memorably, the film features Warhol stalwarts in a variety of supporting roles and Harry Nilsson singing "Everybody's Talkin'" over the main titles. The first X-rated film to win the Best Film Oscar was vindication for McCarthy-blacklisted screenwriter Waldo Salt who picked up the statuette for Screenplay Adaptation. But what you remember most is the screen coupling of Voight and Hoffman, one of Film's greatest, in the seediest buddy movie of all-time.
