Retro Picture Show kicks off the month of SHOCKTOBER with two of the best sci-fi/horror films of the 80s. It's JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING (1982) and THE BLOB (1988). Both screening in glorious 35mm.

JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING
John Carpenter, director of Halloween, The Fog, and Escape from New York continues his phenomenal string of hits with The Thing, a new version of the classic horror thriller starring Kurt Russell. It’s set in the winter of 1982 at a research station in Antarctica where a twelve man research team finds an alien being that has fallen from the sky and has remained buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. Soon it is unfrozen and unleashed, creating havoc and terror as it changes forms and becomes one of them. Put this frightening story together with outstanding performances, incredible special effects by Roy Arbogast, makeup by Rob Bottin, and special visual effects by master Albert Whitlock and you’ve got a movie that Time Magazine describes as “Horrific”. (US, 1982, 109 min, R, 35mm, Dir. John Carpenter)

THE BLOB
More graphically-realistic than ever – “THE BLOB” has returned in this horrific tale about a vile, malignant life-form that crashes to earth in a cozy, rural American town called Arborville. Untroubled by conscience or intellect, the Blob does only one thing – and does it well. It eats anything and everything that movies… men, women, children. And tonight it wants to swallow Arborville whole.
The original version of “The Blob” thrilled and terrified audiences back in the 50s. Now the oozing, gooey killer is back with a whole new high-tech 80s look. What was once only suggested now comes to life in this visually gut-wrenching thriller in the tradition of such classic remakes as “The Thing” and “The Fly”. (US, 1988, 95 min, R, 35mm, Dir. Chuck Russell)
