A powerful indictment of institutional corruption and a testament to the resilience of the Mexican character, director Tatiana Huezo’s follow up to her acclaimed documentary THE TINIEST PLACE opens with a 1,200 mile bus ride across a cold, storm-swept Mexico, from Matamoros to Tulum, as unseen young mother Miriam recounts an otherwise routine day working at the Cancun Airport interrupted by her arrest on trafficking charges, beginning a nightmarish ordeal as one of the country’s many pagadores, innocent people scapegoated by authorities in order to give the impression that everything is under control. Soon Miriam’s story is joined by that of Adela, a professional clown in her family’s circus who quietly recounts how her 20 year-old daughter was kidnapped by the sons of police officials a decade ago, held for ransom against a family who could not pay, and hasn’t been seen since. Huezo expertly weaves together these two devastating narratives, each speaking to the other and painting a powerful portrait of a nation crippled by human trafficking, the devaluation of women’s lives and the ongoing exploitation of the poor by the wealthy.
