Fantasy and reality collide both on and off the silver screen in Woody Allen’s bittersweet comic fantasy about a housewife whose life changes forever when a character from her favorite movie walks off the screen to meet her.

On Sunday, January 29th, please join us in celebrating the close of the Vic Skolnick Life of the Cinema Campaign, and honoring the volunteer campaigners who contributed so much to the vital efforts of our annual campaign. This very special, limited-seating, fundraising event will begin at 11am with a delicious brunch in our Sky Room Café and will include live music performed by harpist Skyla Budd, and an exciting raffle. At 12:30pm, we will move to Cinema 1 for a special screening of Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo.

All proceeds from this event will go towards our campaign goal of $162,000. The success of the annual Vic Skolnick Life of the Cinema Campaign is crucial to our ability to keep bringing the best in independent film programming and cultural events to Long Island. Help us complete our campaign with your attendance at this exclusive event.

Fantasy and reality collide both on and off the silver screen in Woody Allen’s bittersweet comic fantasy The Purple Rose of Cairo, one of contemporary cinema’s most moving tributes to movie fandom. Mia Farrow stars as a Depression-era housewife who is working herself into the ground as a waitress in New Jersey while her husband does nothing. Her only outlet is the cinema, to which she returns time and again to escape from reality and dream of a world of champagne, tuxedoes and elegant parties.  Everything changes when one of the characters (Jeff Daniels) in her favorite film, The Purple Rose of Cairo, notices her and comes out of the screen to meet her, much to the chagrin of her abusive husband (Danny Aiello). As Roger Ebert wrote, “The Purple Rose of Cairo” is “delightful from beginning to end.” (USA, 1985, 88 min., English, PG, 35mm | Dir. Woody Allen)
