Set in 1979, 20th Century Women is the story of three women adapting to the times. Dorothea (Bening) is a single mother to a son, Jamie (Zumann). She and her son have a great relationship, but alas, Jamie is becoming a teenager. This means that her son, her darling son, is withdrawing from her, and she doesn't understand why. She doesn't know what's going on in his life anymore. By finding out what's going on in his life despite him, that's how. As a landlord, she has people she can enlist to spy for her, Namely, the hippie handyman, William (Crudup), and punk photographer Abbie (Gerwig). She even gets the help of Jamie's friend Julie (Fanning), whom Jamie has a crush on. Dorothea is doing it because she cares. She loves her son, whether he wants her to care this much or not.
