Winifried (Simonischek), a divorcee with a recently-deceased dog and a passion for playing pranks with fake personas, tries to reconnect with his daughter Ines (Huller), a businesswoman who has chosen to pursue a career as an outsourcing specialist in the oil industry.
After several failed attempts to connect with each other, Winifried decides to throw caution to the wind and approaches Ines and her friends in the guise of Toni Erdmann, a fake life coach. Ines finds her father's attempts to keep touching back endearing, and before they know it, the two are getting along. All they have to do is pretend not to be themselves until they find a way to be themselves and still like each other. Easy, right?
