Join legendary stage and screen star JOEL GREY for a rare BIG Screen Presentation of Bob Fosse’s breathtakingly original musical drama, featuring Grey in his Academy Award winning role as the Master of Ceremonies - plus a discussion and signing of Grey’s delicious, revealing memoir.

When the musical drama Cabaret hit the screens in 1972, sweeping eight Academy Awards, the world had never seen anything like it before. Set in 1931 Berlin against the threatening backdrop of the Nazi rise to power, the breathtakingly original film had amazingly inventive choreographer Bob Fosse as director, who brought together an ingenious, cutting-edge crew of talent. John Kander and Fred Ebb contributed twelve cynical, wildly entertaining, choreographed numbers, trenchant for their strict attention to historical context. Liza Minnelli shines in her first dramatic singing role as “divinely decadent” but vulnerable Sally Bowles, while Michael York is deeply humane as the fictionalized persona of gay author Christopher Isherwood, whose stories had inspired the film. Holding the entire edifice together is a phenomenal Joel Grey as the “Kit Kat Club’s” leering, omniscient Emcee, in a definitive, Academy Award winning performance that remains unsurpassed today.
(USA, 1972, 124 min., PG, English, DCP, Dir. Bob Fosse)

At once a riveting, heartbreaking memoir, a thrilling show business tell-all, and a portrait of a changing time and nation, “Master of  Ceremonies” is the remarkable story of a living legend.Gay Talese

Joel Grey, the Oscar, Tony and Golden Globe-winning actor, singer, dancer, producer, director - and now acclaimed photographer - tells all, and with artistry and eloquence, in his memoir, Master of Ceremonies. Recounting the story of a life lived both in and out of the limelight, Joel reveals the fascinatingly complex man behind the stage makeup, leading a fraught but exuberant bisexual love life at a time when any sexual ambiguity was both difficult and dangerous. He happily settles down with a wonderful woman - until 24 years later, when his marriage dissolves and Joel once again must find his place in a radically changed world. All the while we learn about his seven decades long career, charting the evolution of American entertainment - from childhood Vaudeville acts with his father and the seedy gangster filled nightclubs of the forties to the bright lights of Broadway, the dizzying glamour of Hollywood and starring roles in such juggernaut musicals as George M!, Chicago, and Wicked.

*Heads Up!  In early February, March 15th’s Special Guest, Patricia Bosworth and her new memoir (with a rare screening of A PLACE IN THE SUN) will be featured in the Sunday NY Times Book Review, People Magazine, on NPR and WNYC’s Leonard Lopate Show!
