This film is a universal tale of struggle against adversity, a drama that takes up the theme of AIDS in the world of amateur boxing. At the start of the epidemic in the 1980’s, the Cuban government took the drastic, although ultimately successful, step of quarantining infected patients in a sanatorium. Part of the approach was to assign a “companion;” in this case a former world-class boxer, is paired with a veteran of Cuba’s mission to support the Congolese colonial revolution.
