Co-sponsored by the College of Visual and Performing Arts-School of Music at the University of Montana.
An Oscar-winner for best Art Direction, "King of Jazz" hasn't been in general distribution for almost 80 years. Recognized by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2013 as being worthy of restoration, it was re-premiered in May 2016 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Directed by John Murray Anderson, featuring Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra, with guests George Gershwin, Bing Crosby (in his first singing role) and many other singers, dancers, and musicians. Don't miss it! Panelists and UM faculty members Nancy Cooper (moderator and musicology), James Randall (musical theater and musicology), Rob Tapper (jazz studies) and Pamyla Stiehl (musical theater and dance history) will answer questions after the viewing.
