Description

Thirty years ago, William Goldman adapted his own sendup of fairy tales into a cult classic film directed by Rob Reiner (This is Spinal Tap). The Princess Bride tells the story of farmhand Westley (Cary Elwes in his most iconic role) on his quest to rescue his true love Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright, in a heartwarming performance) from the evil Prince Humperdinck. Along the way, Westley meets a colorful cast of characters, including a trio of bandits: Vizzini, Fezzik, and Inigo Montoya (Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, and Mandy Patinkin, respectively). While seemingly a children’s story on one level, Reiner & Goldman accomplish that which elevates the typical kid’s flick: they treat their audience with respect, allowing them an adult sense of humor while maintaining their childlike wonder. It’s no surprise the film connects with older folk. So grab your swords, be wary of rodents of unusual size, and take in the magic of The Princess Bride.
