From pioneering woman filmmaker Lois Weber, a powerful drama about a poor shop girl desperately fi ghting to support her parents and three younger sisters. New restoration from EYE Film Museum and Milestone!

Lois Weber was the most successful female filmmaker of her time and a major influence on silent cinema. She directed and wrote many groundbreaking films — dramas that combined social and political critiques with moving personal narratives — but because Weber’s reputation has suffered because her finest films have long been unavailable. The newly-restored Shoes is widely considered to be one of her greatest films.
Eva Meyer (Mary MacLaren) works in a dime store for a few dollars a week, but must solely support her family of two parents and three sisters because her father (Harry Griffith) prefers to lie in bed reading rather than looking for work. Eva desperately needs a new pair of shoes - her old ones are falling to pieces and she is reduced to cutting out and fi tting cardboard soles every evening. Finally, with no other alternative and disheartened, Eva considers the uninvited advances of “Cabaret” Charlie (William V. Mong), a cad with clearly dishonorable intentions. (USA, 1916, 60 min., Silent with English intertitles, NR, DCP | Dir. Lois Weber)
