A new digital restoration of Billie August’s Academy Award winning epic about a father and son who leave their native Sweden to try and find a better life in Denmark.

New digital restoration! Based on the famous 1910 novel of the same name, Pelle The Conqueror won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1988. In it, Pelle (Pelle Hvengaard) is the son of a 19th-century Swedish farmer (Max Von Sydow). Seeking escape from their poverty-stricken surroundings, father and son emigrate to Denmark. Upon arrival, however, they are treated like indentured servants, leading to a profound transformation for the impressionable Pelle. August brilliantly evokes the close, indestructable relationship between Pelle and his father that sustains them through all their challenges.
(Denmark & Sweden, 1987, 157 min., Scanian, Danish, Swedish & Finnish, TVPG13, DCP | Dir. Bille August)
