FilmScene Presents: Spirited Away Spring Break 2017 - March 13-17

Last year, Hayao Miyazaki's Academy Award-winning masterpiece SPIRITED AWAY celebrated its 15th Anniversary! The film was the biggest box office hit of all time in Japan and a film that helped redefine the possibilities of animation for American audiences and a generation of new filmmakers.

During 2017 Spring Break week (for both Iowa City grade schools and the University of Iowa), FilmScene is pleased to partner with our friends at GKIDS to present the film in honor of the anniversary. A can't-miss big-screen treat, we will present the film daily at 1pm Mon-Friday, March 13-17 with screenings of the English dub on Mon, Wed, Fri, and the orignal Japanese with subtitles on Tue & Thu.

By popular demand, 3 encore shows added: English-language at 11am Sat and Sun, March 18 and 19; and original Japanese at 7:15pm Wed, March 22!

Stay after all shows for a bonus short film "Ghiblies: Episode 2"!

SPIRITED AWAY

Wandering through an abandoned carnival site, ten-year-old Chichiro is separated from her parents and stumbles into a dream-like spirit world where she is put to work in a bathhouse for the gods, a place where all kinds of nonhuman beings come to refresh, relax and recharge. Here she encounters a vast menagerie of impossibly inventive characters — shape-shifting phantoms and spirits, some friendly, some less so — and must find the inner strength to outsmart her captors and return to her family. Combining Japanese mythology with Through the Looking Glass-type whimsy, SPIRITED AWAY cemented Miyazaki's reputation as an icon of inspired animation and wondrous, lyrical storytelling.
