In mid-1980s Greece, Kenneth, an Englishman, and Theres, a German girl, are buskers, singing in the street to finance their vacation. They are in love and enjoying themselves in spite of the relative hardships. When Kenneth learns that his mother had an accident, he must quickly return to England, and Theres, feeling abandoned, decides to end the relationship from afar. Kenneth realizes that he needs her, but fails in his attempts to win her back. Three decades later, in Berlin, Ariane is a 40-year-old TV actress who leaves her husband, David, a successful anthropologist, after a marital crisis. After moving into an apartment near the main railroad station, David begins to notice a homeless man outside his window. It is Kenneth, who does not know that Theres now also lives in Berlin. This minimalist feature by Berlin School director Angela Schanelec has been called “a masterpiece” by Filmmaker Magazine.
