Billed as “a film of no story,” this unscripted road/horror hybrid has been taking festivals by storm—audiences agree that Sexy Durga is the most nightmarish van ride you will ever take. Kabeer and Durga, he a local man and she a woman from the north, are fleeing his angry parents, hitchhiking on dark back roads to the railway station in rural Kerala. A small yellow van with a blaring stereo picks up the couple, and they ride, sitting nearly on top of one another, as the van travels from one nightmare scenario to another: corrupt cops, bizarre religious rituals, and even the two lunatics in the van, whose sadistic psychological torment makes viewers extremely uncomfortable. The film has proven so controversial its director has received death threats in his native India. “Sexy Durga is a chilling and bold accomplishment in the evolution of the Indian thriller.” — ScreenAnarchy.com
