40 Years of May Day is a triptych of short documentaries that capture the spirit of protest that occurs every May 1 in Powderhorn Park. In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre’s annual May Day Parade, Tree of Life Ceremony, and Festival is a beloved ritual of creativity and community participation. With over 50,000 people attending each spring, the May Day parade is one of the nation’s most important political and cultural celebration. These three documentaries—from directors Mike Rivard, Daniel Polsfuss, and Will Hommeyer—explore the cultural, political, artistic, theatrical phenomenon happening in Minneapolis for over 40 years. Binding communities as varied and diverse as Minnesota itself. Honoring the passing and the birth of people and events that effect our lives.
