Description

From multiple Cannes Palme d’Or winners the Dardenne Brothers comes yet another brilliant examination of good people in dire straits. In the case of The Unknown Girl, Dr. Jenny Davin (played by Adèle Haenel), doesn’t answer a buzzer late at night, only to find that it was the eponymous African immigrant woman, who was ringing for urgent help. Obsessed with finding the identity of the woman, and the cause of her death, Dr. Davin becomes both doctor and sleuth, using her credentials as a way of approaching those who would normally be wary of any official.

Trying to both investigate the case and understand its medical implications, Dr. Davin tries to live by her own advice — “Emotional involvement leads to a bad diagnosis” — as she negotiates this world that is utterly new to her, she begins to lose her professional veneer and finds herself deeply involved.
