The Youth Filmmaker Competition is a program of short films that have been submitted to the Festival by a diverse group of young filmmakers from around the globe. The 12 films competing in this year’s competition, all made by filmmakers ages 11 to 18, were chosen from a pool of nearly 100 submissions by our Competition Selection Committee made up of members of the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s Teen Art Team.

Winners of the Youth Jury Film Award and Certificate of Excellence are chosen by the Youth Jury Ages 15-18.

"We chose films that highlight many different views of our world. In these films you'll see artists experimenting with form, hear Indigenous voices, meet people from trans and other LGBTQ+ communities, and catch glimpses of the hopes, fears, and everyday realities of immigrants and people of color across generations."
Youth Filmmaking Panel
Following the screening, join us for a talk with youth and young filmmakers to discuss the diversity of stories and styles that they find intriguing when they watch movies and set out to make their own. We’ll discuss how youth cinema fits into the larger context of filmmaking, and what young filmmakers want to learn from their adult peers working today.
