With Director Whit Stillman in person!

Famed independent filmmaker Whit Stillman, director of the recent hit Love & Friendship, returns to CAC with his beloved 1990 debut Metropolitan, an ironically comic look at Manhattan's endangered debutante scene.

One of the great American independent films of the 1990s, the surprise hit Metropolitan, by writer-director Whit Stillman, is a sparkling comedic chronicle of a young middle-class Princeton student’s romantic misadventures while trying to fit into New York City’s debutante society, the “urban haute bourgeoisie." Metropolitan chronicles the rise and ultimate decline of a group of young Park Avenue socialites who gather nightly to discuss love, honor, and the impending demise of their class. Stillman’s deft, literate dialogue and hilariously highbrow observations earned this first film an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. Beneath the wit and sophistication, though, lies a tender tale of adolescent anxiety. (USA, 1990, 98 min., English, PG-13, DCP | Dir. Whit Stillman)
