Description
Winner of last year's Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, I, Daniel Blake is Ken Loach doing what Ken Loach does best, chronicalling the struggles and minor successes of the British working class.
Daniel is an affable, 59-year-old carpenter in Newcastle, fighting to collect his Employment and Support Allowance after suffering a heart attack. Waiting to sign on at the local Jobcentre, Daniel befriends Katie, a young single mother who is also being shoved around by the vagaries of the system, having just been relocated with her two kids from a London homeless shelter to an affordable council flat up north. As the two navigate the system, they become allies, friends, and finally, a found family.
When Daniel vandalizes the Jobcenter he earns the support from the community, but well-wishes can't pay the bills, and so his appeal for his benefits continue, for better and for worse.
