Menashe
Menashe | 82mins | Yiddish with English Subtitles
Menashe loses his wife, Leah, and now he may lose his son. In his ultra-orthodox, Hasidic Jewish community, children must be brought up in dual-parent households, meaning that unless Menashe marries soon, his son will be adopted by his strict brother-in-law. Menashe doesn't want to remarry, though, and he doesn't want to give up his son, either. Thanks to his rabbi, Menashe retains custody of his son until Leah's memorial service. He also arranges for the memorial to be held in his apartment, which can be described as humble by the kindest of people, and squalor by the less kind. The important thing is that Menashe has a chance to prove that he can raise his son on his own, if only his community will let him.
