Bestselling author and award winning actor Alan Cumming returns to the CAC with his charming new book, The Adventures of Honey & Leon, plus a rare screening of his virtuoso film co-created with Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Anniversary Party.
The Anniversary Party. In a virtuoso serio-comic turn, best friends Alan Cumming and Jennifer Jason Leigh co-wrote, co-directed, co-produced and co-starred in The Anniversary Party in 2001, with an all-star ensemble cast that also includes Kevin Kline, Gwyneth Paltrow, Parker Posey, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Beals, Dennis O’Hare, Jane Adams and John Benjamin Hickey. This sometimes scathing, voyeuristic chamber piece finds writer-director Joe (Cumming) and actress Sally Therrian (Leigh) holding a party to celebrate several important junctures in their marriage: their sixth anniversary, their decision to start a family and their reconciliation after a yearlong separation. They’ve invited their colorful but emotionally fraught grab bag of friends, and (to avoid a lawsuit) their contentious neighbors. An unexpected gift sends the party spiraling out of control, transforming the celebration into a scorching dissection of a marriage on the brink. (USA, 2001, 115 min., R, English, DCP | Dir. Alan Cumming & Jennifer Jason Leigh)

The Adventures of Honey & Leon. The “beyond eclectic” actor, singer, director and New York Times bestselling author Alan Cumming - acclaimed as “Eli Gold” in the hit TV series The Good Wife, Tony winner for Cabaret - joins forces with his accomplished artist-husband Grant Shaffer to imagine what their two dogs do when they’re not around.  Honey and Leon are rescue mutts who love their dads very much. But their dads often have to go away on glamorous and important business, which worries the dogs. Honey and Leon are done staying home and fretting—they’re off on a dad-protecting adventure! The Adventures of Honey and Leon makes a charming gift for adults still in touch with their “inner pup,”  as well as for their favorite children, grandchildren, and granddogs.

Grant Shaffer’s illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times,  Interview Magazine, etc.  Also a storyboard artist for films and music videos, he illustrates children’s books for Penguin Random House, including TV’s “The Good Wife” Julianna Margulies’ Three Magic Balloons.  He also teaches at the School of Visual Arts and the Hetrick-Martin Institute. He is married to Alan Cumming.
