Description

Opens 10/6.

Beginning in 1950, the Cummins Engine Company commissioned local public works buildings from innovative and renowned architects to lure culure-savy talent to their Columbus, Indiana headquarters. Among those architects were I.M Pei, Richard Meier, and Cesar Pelli. Today, many acknowledge Columbus to an extraordinary place. This unlikely mecca is the setting of Kogonda's first feature film. In an interview with The European Magazine, Norman Foster states "Architecture is an expression of values." In Iowa City, we hold values of hard work, simplicity, and honesty. Right now we have a unique opportunity to stay engaged and participate in shaping these buildings for the future.

Join Neumann Monson, Filmscene, and the South East Iowa Architects after the 3:30 PM screening on Sunday, Oct. 8 for an open-forum panel discussion featuring several practicing architects and professors of architecture. This event will be free for students of all ages with a student ID.

"[The director] frames everything ... with Zen-like composition, giving Columbus a beauty that strengthens the foundation of its two transcendent lead performances." —Thrillist

"Few contemporary American films operate on this level of aesthetic precision. In a first feature, yet." — Chicago Tribune

"Kogonada in his impressive feature debut applies the principles of these architects to the compositions and structure of the film, a formal tour-de-force that eclipses its modest - though affecting and impeccably acted - narrative." — Boston Globe

When a renowned architecture scholar falls suddenly ill during a speaking tour, his son Jin (John Cho) finds himself stranded in Columbus, Indiana - a small Midwestern city celebrated for its many significant modernist buildings. Jin strikes up a friendship with Casey (Haley Lu Richardson), a young architecture enthusiast who works at the local library. As their intimacy develops, Jin and Casey explore both the town and their conflicted emotions: Jin's estranged relationship with his father, and Casey's reluctance to leave Columbus and her mother. With its naturalistic rhythms and empathy for the complexities of families, director Kogonada (Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film) crafts an astonishing debut that unfolds as a gently drifting, deeply absorbing conversation. With strong supporting turns from Parker Posey, Rory Culkin, and Michelle Forbes, COLUMBUS is also a showcase for its director's striking eye for the way physical space can affect emotions.
