Description

Q&A with director Oleg Timofeyev and producer

“Sorabji in Iowa” is a story of life-long obsession, commitment, and endurance. In the 1970s, Kevin Bowyer, then the rising star of British organ scene, discovered the organ symphonies by Kaikhosru Sorabji. These works were considered unplayable due to their unusual length and excruciating difficulty. Kevin spent most of his life learning how the play these pieces. In February 2017, he traveled from Glasgow to Iowa City, IA in order to inaugurate the University of Iowa's majestic new organ with the 8.5-hr-long “Organ Symphony No. 2” by Sorabji. Listeners from all over the US came to hear this rare performance ("the chance of a lifetime”). The documentary focuses on the eccentric composer's views on music, but also on the toll his work has taken on the performer.
