Born poor and into the juvie-to-prison pipeline, wayward but well-meaning Zambrano (Adrian Ladrón, Gueros) loves two things: playing American-style football and stealing cars. When the latter gets him sent to Mexico City’s notorious Santa Martha penitentiary, often called the world’s toughest prison, he quickly earns a place on their famed football team, the Santa Martha Dogs, which also doubles as the 4th Company, the prison’s notorious crime syndicate, led by kindly ringleader Palafox (Hernán Mendoza, After Lucia) who manages narcotics and gambling operations inside of Santa Martha and a sophisticated car theft and bank robbery ring on the outside. The 4th Company soon find themselves expendable after running afoul of an agreement between corrupt police officials and military brass, a score settled during an infamous and memorable football game between the Dogs and their police counterparts in this fast, over-the-top prison film.
Set during the liberalization of prison policies of the late 1970s, co-directors Amir Galvan Cervera and Mitzi Vanessa Arreola tell the incredible true story of a group of misunderstood underdogs who unwittingly found themselves patsies of larger systemic corruption. Alive with eye-popping visuals and a high-energy soundtrack, The 4th Company takes its place among the most essential and memorable prison films ever produced.
The 4th Company premiered at the Guadalajara Film Festival in 2016 and received the Best Actor and the Special Jury Award in the Ibero-American Competition. The film was nominated in 16 categories for the 2017 Ariel Awards and got a record of six, including the Golden Ariel for Best Picture, and the Silver Ariels for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Special Effects, Best Sound and Best Editing.
Nacido pobre y ya en la rápida vía de la cárcel juvenil a la prisión de adultos, el rebelde aunque bien intencionado Zambrano (Adrián Ladrón, Güeros) ama dos cosas: jugar al fútbol Americano y robar autos.
