The National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico is a site of festivity unlike any other in the world. In celebration of San Juan de Dios, patron saint of firework makers, conflagrant revelry engulfs the town for ten days. Artisans show off their technical virtuosity, up-and-comers create their own rowdy, lofi combustibles, and dozens of teams build larger-than-life papier-mache´ bulls to parade into the town square, adorned with fireworks that blow up in all directions. More than three quarters of Tultepec’s residents work in pyrotechnics, making the festival more than revelry for revelry’s sake. It is a celebration that anchors a way of life built around a generations-old, homegrown business of making fireworks by hand. For the people of Tultepec, the National Pyrotechnic Festival is explosive celebration, unrestrained delight and real peril. Plunging headlong into the fire, Brimstone & Glory honors the spirit of Tultepec’s community and celebrates celebration itself.
Cada año, durante 7 días en el mes de marzo Tultepec, la capital oficial de la pirotecnia en México, deja de ser un tranquilo pueblo para convertirse en un lugar de belleza sobrenatural y caos sin comparación en el planeta. Honrando a San Juan de Dios, el santo patrón de los fabricantes de pirotecnia, los residentes de Tultepec organizan el Festival Nacional de la Pirotecnia que atrae a más 100.000 personas de todo el mundo. Comienza con las torres de fuego, estructuras colosales encendidas con discos giratorios de llamas y destellos de colores, y termina con la quema de los toros, enormes toros de papel maché llenos de fuegos artificiales encendidos y lanzados a toda velocidad por el pueblo. El festival es fundamental en la identidad de Tultepec, al mismo tiempo un orgullo cívico, una prueba del valor de sus participantes y y para unos pocos, la posibilidad de transformarse espiritualmente y trascender.
Bellamente filmada y con una banda sonora escalofriante, el director Viktor Jakolevski, junto al productor Benh Zeitlin (co-escritor/director, Bestias del sur salvaje), han logrado un inolvidable e íntimo testimonio a la dedicación de una comunidad y al espíritu resiliente de una nación.
