An unflinching and uncompromising look at the pervasiveness of violence at every level of life in contemporary Mexico, Devil’s Freedom is director Everardo Gonzalez’s (El Paso, Drought) searing, hard to shake portrait of a nation and its people defined by a culture of unspeakable, almost commonplace terror. Given anonymity by form-fitting, flesh colored masks, victims and assassins alike openly and intimately recount their involvement in the country’s almost routine acts of violence. Episodes of their daily lives are framed by detailed and shocking stories, and the portrait of a society emerges, in which deep fears and the lack of justice rule. Filmed in an evocative, high-contrast visual palette by DP María Secco and bolstered by a moody score by composer Quincas Moreira, Devil’s Freedom brilliantly captures the realities of living in this traumatic moment in Mexico’s history, and the human cost paid to a deeply broken system.
The film swept this year’s Guadalajara International Film Festival Awards, receiving all of the top prizes: Best Mexican Film, Best Ibero American Documentary, Best Cinematography and the Press Award for Best Documentary.
Una mirada firme y sin compromisos a la omnipresencia de la violencia en todos los niveles de la vida contemporánea en México, La libertad del diablo es el agudo retrato que pinta Everardo González (El Paso, Sequía) de una nación y su gente definida por una cultura de innombrable y casi familiar terror. Protegidos por la anonimidad brindada por una máscara color piel, asesinos y víctimas nos cuentan descarnada e íntimamente su participación en los actos de violencia que son prácticamente de rutina en el país. De los episodios de su vida diaria puntualizados con historias escalofriantes y detalladas, emerge el retrato de una sociedad en la que reinan el miedo intenso y la ausencia de justicia. Filmada en una escala evocativa y de alto contraste visual por la cinefotógrafa Maria Secco, y acentuada con la música temperamental de Quincas Moreira, La libertad del diablo captura en forma brillante la realidad de vivir en este traumático momento de la historia de México, y el costo humano de un sistema profundamente enfermo. El largometraje barrió con los premios del Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara este año, recibiendo todos los premios principales: mejor película mexicana, mejor documental Iberoamericano, mejor cinematografía y el premio de la prensa al mejor documental.

SYNOPSIS: In the winter of 1988, my mother trekked the hills of the Tijuana-San Diego border at the age of twenty- one to enter the elusive “el norte.” Newlywed, full of hopes, dreams, and fears, she never imagined that she would one day call herself an American. What was an anticipated short stay, a temporary means to an end, became home. Nuestro Pai´s is a short experimental animated documentary lm about immigrant families living in the U.S. told through an intimate lens.
