Swim Team chronicles the overwhelming struggles and extraordinary triumphs of 3 young athletes with autism and shows how a swim team can bring hope to a community.
Participation in sports is a central feature of children’s lives, but opportunities for autistic kids are limited. Swim Team begins with one New Jersey family circumventing the lack of options for their son by creating their own team. Within weeks, 15 swimmers with autism join the Jersey Hammerheads. Most are Asian and Hispanic boys, underserved in autism intervention and underrepresented in media. Mike Jr., Robert and Kelvin are all on the verge of adulthood, when government services for the developmentally disabled become scarce and the likelihood of dependence great. Their families worry of what may happen when they are no longer able to care for them, but these boys are determined to defy expectations and we see how swimming with the Hammerheads begins to transform their lives.
