Description

The inspiring true story of Bishop Carlton Pearson, who is ostracized by his Evangelical church after preaching a more inclusive and compassionate version of the gospel, getting into a war of scriptural semantics, and redefining the idea of Hell. Chiwetel Ejiofor gives a powerful performance as the conscience-bound preacher whose transformational journey has ripple effects on everyone in his life including his pragmatic wife Gina, played with beautiful restraint by Condola Rashad, and his business partner and fellow minister Henry, played with conflicted conviction by Jason Segal who is as much worried about Carlton’s soul as he is about the bottom line. Martin Sheen gives a chilling performance as Oral Roberts who thinks Carlton is being influenced by the devil and rising star Lakeith Stanfield gives a heart-breaking performance as the closeted gay and HIV-positive musical director. Producer Ira Glass had previously profiled this story in 2005 in the “Heretics” episode of NPR’s This American Life. Director Joshua Marston brings this deeply human story to cinematic life with a fair and balanced portrayal. This Netflix original film had its World Premiere at Sundance and is making its East Coast Premiere at Annapolis.
