Lasse Hallström’s beloved classic about a twelve-year-old boy who finds both refuge from his misfortunes and unexpected adventure when he is sent to live with his uncle in a country village after his mother falls ill. A magical and bittersweet evocation of the struggles and joys of childhood.

Based on an autobiographical novel by Reidar Jonsson, My Life as a Dog (Mitt liv som hund) was a huge art-house hit in 1987, and was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Lasse Hallström as Best Director and Screenplay. Its success launched Swedish helmer Hallström’s Hollywood career (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules, Chocolat). The film tells the story of Ingemar, a twelve-year-old from a working-class family sent to live with his uncle in a country village when his mother falls ill. There, with the help of the warm-hearted eccentrics who populate the town, the boy finds both refuge from his misfortunes and unexpected adventure. Featuring an incredibly mature and unaffected performance by the young Anton Glanzelius, this film is a beloved and bittersweet evocation of the struggles and joys of childhood. (Sweden, 1985, 101 min., NR, Swedish with English subtitles | Dir. Lasse Hallstrom)
