The Wife
The Wife | 100mins |
An Oscar bait performance by Glenn Close, who is long overdue for the award. Joan and Joe remain complements after nearly 40 years of marriage. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as the great American novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm and diplomacy into the private role of a great man's wife. As Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work, Joan starts to think about the shared compromises, secrets and betrayals. Because at the end of the day, she was more than his partner in marriage, and she's getting tired of seeing her husband get all the credit for writing when so much of his writing is, in fact, hers. With a reporter trying to write Joe's definitive biography - whether Joe wants it or not - she finally has a chance to get recognition and validation. All she has to do is decide what she cares for more: Credit for her work, or her husband.
