CAPERNAUM
Academy Award® Nominee Best Foreign Language Film
Jury Prize Winner at 2018 Cannes Film Festival
From Lebanon, a searing Social Realist drama with a breathless pace, Capernaum follows Zain, a young Lebanese boy who must fend for himself on the dangerous streets of Beirut. One of many siblings born to inattentive and abusive parents, Zain seeks respite elsewhere, finding it in the home of Rahil, an Ethiopian refugee and her infant, Yonas. Led by an extraordinary cast of non-actors, Labaki’s film focuses our gaze on Zain, forced to mature in a world where all systems have deteriorated. Steeped in the quiet routines of ordinary people, and set in the depths of a society's systematic inhumanity, Capernaum is ultimately a hopeful film that stirs the heart as deeply as it cries out for action.
