The true story of the 1944 deportation of the Crimean Tatars from their homeland of Crimea.
Haytarma is the first and only full length feature film about the 1944 deportation of the Crimean Tatars from their homeland of Crimea, a genocidal act that resulted in the death of 46% of the Crimean Tatar population. The story is told through the eyes of Amet-Khan Sultan, a real life Soviet war hero, who is stationed in Crimea and is caught up in the drama of the deportation. Forced out of their homes in the middle of the night, the Crimean Tatars are given 15 minutes to pack their belongings and herded into cattle cars to distant Soviet republics. Filmed in Crimea before the 2014 Russian annexation, Haytarma uses local actors and over a thousand elderly Crimean Tatars from Crimea who had personally witnessed the deportation.
The screening of Haytarma is presented by the Ukrainian American Community Center and International Committee for Crimea.
