Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace | 89mins |
You asked for it, we got it. Thank you for not going out to the multiplex to see it!
In 1972, Aretha Franklin, with a recording crew in tow, performed at New Temple Missionary Baptist Church for two nights. The sound recording went on to become her legendary Amazing Grace album. The film recording didn't fare as well. Late director Sydney Pollack did what he could, but it wasn't until the digital age that the technology to fix the film recording became available.
And what a film it turned out to be. No talking heads and almost no talking outside of the emcee. The focus is entirely on Aretha's soulful, uplifting performance. Critics are calling it everything from "the new gold standard of filmed music concerts" to "a priceless gift to music fans."
