Shakespeare’s tale of two star-crossed lovers is brought to life by Kenneth MacMillan’s sensuous and vividly detailed choreography in his outstanding 20th-century ballet masterpiece.

Shakespeare’s enduring love story is known the world over. Since its 1965 premiere with The Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet has become a modern ballet classic. When it premiered at Covent Garden in 1965, the title roles were danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn and has been performed by The Royal Ballet more than four hundred times since. Each revival gives opportunities for new dancers to interpret the doomed lovers. Kenneth MacMillan's passionate choreography shows The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest. Sergey Prokofiev's iconic score provides the basis for the ballet's romantic pas de deux and vibrant crowd scenes, while 16th-century Verona is created by Nicholas Georgiadis's magnificent set designs. The whole Company brings the color and action of Renaissance Verona, where a busy market all too quickly bursts into sword fighting, and a family feud leads to tragedy for both the Montagues and Capulets.
