"A haunting beauty with a commanding screen presence, able to convey more with one squint of her eye than most actors could in an entire page of dialogue." - Christopher Bickel, Dangerous Minds

"Shun'ya Ito's psychedelic, offbeat direction makes his Female Prisoner films much more than politically aware exploitation movies, positioning them somewhere closer to arthouse cinema than to some of the genre's crass, demeaning counterparts." - Sarah Cronin, Electric Sheep Magazine

"There is just something so satisfying about a confident woman who takes no dung, and hands out pain and suffering to anyone who gets all up in her grill." - Robin Bougie, Cinema Sewer

The film that introduced the iconic and unforgettable character of Scorpion to the world, made lead actress Meiko Kaji a major star, and led to three direct sequels and nearly a dozen other adaptations!

The directorial debut of Shun'ya Ito, whose artistic ambition far surpassed the puply source material (an adult comic by Toru Shinohara), the film follows Nami, a gullible but strong and beautiful young woman who falls in love with a police detective (Isao Natsuyagi), only to be betrayed. Sent to a sadistic women's prison, Nami is forced to summon her inner strength in order to fight off the other violent inmates, as well as to survive the tortures of the cruel warden (Fumio Watanabe).

Taking the exploitation genre to surreal and psychedelic heights, and an instant classic women-in-prison film, Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion ladles out sex and violence in equal measure, but always balanced by its hyper-real, manga-like visual style, searing hues, and the stunning performance of lead actress Kaji.
